Out of death, comes rebirth. Out of unicorns, comes…rainbows?

Death Rides a Unicorn Events is an event management team that stems from a want of humourous literary and spoken word events. After the last couple of pandemic, tragic years in which everyone has lost something, someone, or everything the organizers feel a necessity to share humour and joy in an original format. We are old fashioned and romantic, but love new shapes and forms.

Our first sojourn into events was Famous Last Words, then The Seventeen Syllable Poetry Slam as part of Word Vancouver 2023 before our most recent endeavour, Under the Rooftops of Vancouver. We have also had the privilege to help Alessandra Nacarrato with the Vancouver book launch of her latest book entitled, Imminent Domains: Reckoning with the Anthropocene (Book*hug Press, 2022).

In October of 2023, Death Rides a Unicorn became a not-for-profit which should hopefully lead to us applying for grants and producing more shows, employing more artists and showcase literary and spoken word to larger audiences. With the help of various festivals and community partners are currently planning on producing 8-12 events in 2024 including our yet to be launched, Liars of Orpheus. Liars of Orpheus will be a show that flips the ideas of truth, beauty and poetry on its head and ham fists them full of lies, tall tales and fantasies.

Our first show of 2024 will be Famous Last Words Toronto on Sunday March 17th at the Drake (1150 Queen St W, Toronto, Ontario). After that we are coming back home to enjoy Famous Last Words Vancouver at the Verses Festival on Tuesday April 23rd at Vivace on the Drive (1728 Commercial Drive).
